A granite basement from deep in the Precambrian

Everything in Wadi Rum sits on a foundation of granite that geologists date to hundreds of millions of years old (late Precambrian) — among the oldest rock exposed anywhere in Jordan. You see it at the base of some of the taller jebels and along parts of the valley floor, where it's a darker, coarser rock than the sandstone above it. This granite formed deep underground, long before there was a Wadi Rum, an Arabian Peninsula or even complex life on land, and it only became visible millions of years later once the rock above it was uplifted and worn away. It's the hard, stable base everything else in the landscape was built on top of.

Sandstone laid down by ancient seas

Above the granite, two main sandstone layers were deposited by shallow seas that repeatedly advanced and retreated across this part of Arabia hundreds of millions of years ago — geologists call the lower layer the Umm Ishrin sandstone and the upper one the Disi sandstone. Each layer built up as sand and sediment settled in beds, sometimes gently sloping, which is why you can often see faint horizontal or diagonal banding in the cliff faces. The famous colours — deep red, orange, pink, cream and white, sometimes in the same rock face — come from varying amounts of iron oxide and other minerals trapped in the stone as it formed, the same chemistry that rusts iron rather than anything more exotic.

Uplift, fault lines and the making of the jebels

The valley's dramatic shape owes a lot to tectonics. As the Great Rift Valley system — the same one running down through the Dead Sea and the Red Sea — pulled the earth's crust apart tens of millions of years ago, the ground beneath Wadi Rum was pushed upward and fractured into a grid of faults. That cracking mattered more than the uplift itself: it created lines of weakness through the rock that erosion could later exploit. Instead of one smooth desert floor, the landscape split into blocks — some destined to become the towering jebels that still stand, others fated to be worn down into the flat sandy wadis between them.

Wind, flash floods and the wadis

Wadi Rum's name literally means valley — and the valleys are as much the story as the mountains. Over millions of years, desert wind sandblasted the exposed rock while rare but violent flash floods tore through the fault lines, carrying sediment away and grinding the softer, more fractured sandstone down far faster than the solid jebels beside it. That's the mechanism behind the whole landscape: not one giant carving event but a slow, uneven stripping-away that left the toughest rock standing as isolated mountains while everything around it turned to sand. The same forces are still working today, just too slowly for a single visit to notice — the dunes shift with every strong wind, and a good storm can reshape a canyon floor.

How the arches and canyons form

Wadi Rum's natural rock bridges — Um Fruth, Burdah and others — and its narrow canyons like Khazali form the same way, on a smaller scale: water finds a joint or a soft seam in the sandstone, and repeated weathering and flash floods slowly widen it into a crack, then a gap, then eventually a hole clean through the rock. Given enough time, a thin section of stone left spanning that gap becomes a natural arch; where the whole face splits instead, you get a slot canyon. It's the same slow process that shapes the jebels, just concentrated along a single weak line in the rock rather than spread across a whole mountain — which is why arches tend to appear at the narrower, more exposed edges of a formation.

Granite versus sandstone, at a glance

The desert's two dominant rock types are easy enough to tell apart once you know what to look for, and spotting the join between them is one of the more satisfying things to notice from the jeep — a rough, dark band low on a jebel giving way abruptly to smoother, redder stone above, marking roughly where the ancient granite surface ended and the seas that deposited the sandstone began. The table below is a rough guide rather than a geologist's survey, since the boundary shifts across the valley and plenty of jebels are sandstone from base to summit with no visible granite at all.
